Getting crafty and creative with Unilever #bettertogether

Making Life Better with Unilever #bettertogether

I made this using leftover popsicle sticks that were ultimately heading for the trash. It feels great to make my best effort to live more sustainably, and make cute stuff in the process!

As you well know, I have declared that I will be participating in the Cross Off Hunger Campaign in partnership with Feeding America. It’s all about purchasing your favorite Unilever brands.

Why?

Because Unilever is committed to donating more than two million meals to families in need with Feeding America and every item on your shopping list counts.  Show your support by adding Unilever brands to your cart next time you shop.  Together we can help to Cross Off Hunger.

So I decided to go shopping at Target, armed with 50$ to spend on Unilever products for our local food bank. We managed to find many things that would be a perfect non-perishable food source such as…

1. Skippy peanut butter

2. A jar of Hellmans mayo – can be used in alot of great recipes!

3. Personal Care products. When buying things to donate to a food bank, often times personal care products get overlooked. I made it a point to stock up on some of these for my donation as well.

I haven’t forgotten – Feeding America(R), the nation’s largest organization dedicated to fighting domestic hunger through a network of food banks.  $1=8meals secured by Feeding America on behalf of local food banks.  Unilever will donate $250,000.  The monetary equivalent of a minimum of 2 million meals will be donated.

But the winner of them all was the Spiderman popsicles that I told JP I would buy for him. He was so happy!

These are a great treat to have around – JP does not seem to care that it is nearly January, he is still asking for popsicles as if it were the middle of July. Especially now that we have some special spiderman ones – it has become his favorite thing in the freezer! Unilever has such awesome brands!

So when we got home, I gave it some thought as to how I would live a little more sustainably, and I just kept thinking about what to do about those popsicle sticks. I decided to make a christmas decoration!

Making it was easy – here’s what I did:

First things first, I made a couple of grilled cheese sandwiches for both me and JP to snack on before we started. I used my favorite spread, also a Unilever product to help make it.

Then we had some popsicles for dessert…

I needed as many popsicle sticks as I could get my hands on! I used a shipping envelope from my shop, and made a wreath shape out of it. Then with my Painters Marker, I colored it green so it would have a nice solid base color.

I cut up the popsicle sticks into pieces that could be easily glued on to the wreath…

Then I glued them on to my painted wreath!

Once it was all done, it looked like this:

Then I added glitter by spraying some gloss spray as adhesive, and glittering it up with some green glitter.

My low-budget office facelift #GELighting

About 1 year ago, I had a budding craft room and so many ideas on how I was going to fix it all up. I had post it’s all over the IKEA catalog and digital design boards to match. Then my husband came home one day and announced he had this fabulous new job – with a downside. I’ll lose my craft room because it will need to become his office.

Wait a minute.. You said WHAT???

As any good wife does, I reluctantly moved my expedit desk and bookcase to our empty dining area, and set up shop there. We used to keep our long dining room table here, until I realized JP needed to eat in an area where it could easily be cleaned. The tiled kitchen as opposed to our wall to wall carpet is much easier to clean off things like ketchup and spilled milk.

Since I don’t get alot of undisturbed time to do anything, so I found out I kinda like being out in the open while I do things at my desk. Alot of times, when I used to be set up inside a room – the door would remain shut to conceal the disaster within. I’ve learned to be better about that, now that my creative spot is part of our house!

So here’s what I had, pre-lighting makeover: A small IKEA desk lamp and natural lighting from the window.

The result? The world’s worst mish-mash!

A green wall, the old rug from JP’s nursery, 2 chairs from our dining room because we don’t need to seat 8 people, my desk and bookcase, oodles of craft junk and stuff related to my etsy shop. *whew*

That’s alot of crap for one tiny little corner!!

One big challenge I face with having an office with no door, is pile-ups occur on top of bookshelves when random objects fall into little hands. But buying storage furniture is for another time – this post is about a budget makeover! :)

This video from GE Lighting best expresses what i’d love to see happen around my house with respect to using energy saving bulbs! So far, i’m into this makeover for about 25 bucks and alot of elbow grease.

One of the things that remained from my once dining room, is the dining room light fixture that I loved so much when my dining room was a dining room. It takes 18 candelabra style bulbs! Eeek!

Either way, I love the light – but it’s not what I would have picked out for my office. So instead of using the overhead lighting, I decided to find a couple of lamps to keep the room lit. I took JP out shopping one evening, in hopes it would tire him out for bed time! All that happened from that experience was having to buy a spongebob light projector for bedtime. So cute, I couldn’t say no – especially because he sometimes wakes up at night crying from his bedroom that he’s scared of the dark. Awwww!

I got these for my office lamps, to brighten things up a little! They even had energy saving bulbs for outdoor lights! I didn’t know those existed!

I came home with some GE Reveal energy saving lightbulbs, enough for 3 sockets. I put one in the lamp next to my printer and 2 in another floorlamp with attached reading lamp that I resurrected from the garage.

I put out the old nursing chair I had from JP’s nursery, 1 of 2 pillows from our sofa and old lamp we might have thrown away. I even have enough room to keep my sewing machines where I will USE them!! I love sitting here now!

Now on with how to clean that cooktop!

Cleaning Glass Cooktop with baking soda and water #cleaning

Baking soda, not to be confused with baking powder, is one of the best DIY home cleaners you can possibly find – and cheap too!

I am sharing my diy home made method of how to clean a ceramic glass cooktop cleaning using baking soda.  My other favorite go-to cleaning solution is vinegar, but for this all I needed was a few household items.

So this is my stove, before I began cleaning a glass cooktop. Looks clean, right?… Not very…

You get in a little closer and see the battle scars from making home made french fries.. Gross right? Yes, I know I probably should have cleaned it up right after the mess happened, but let’s face it – it was too hot to touch and then I forgot about it. Also I’m the queen of boil overs, and there’s no real good stovetop cleaner out there. I’ve heard of different care methods, like using an exacto blade to scrape off carbonized residue, but I was afraid it would scratch up the smooth glass. Not wanting that to happen, I looked into some other alternatives, and the best one is.. Baking Soda!!

Cleaning Glass Cooktop with natural cleaners

Don’t ever assume that it’s easier to clean than the old fashioned coils. I thought that 6 months ago when we got this stove that it would be easier to clean for its smooth surface, but don’t be fooled. Whatever the case,  it’s awful and yucky looking, so I thought it was high time to see how I could get rid of this fossilized grease on my stovetop.

All you need is

  1. Bowl & Hot Soapy Water
  2. Baking Soda
  3. A Cleaning Rag
  4. Gloves (I didn’t use any because I thought baking soda wouldnt be harsh on my hands.. but I was wrong, so try to use gloves, you’ll thank me later)

First, you fill a bowl with hot tap water water and mix it with some dish soap. Submerge the rag in the bowl and get it wet.

Soapy Hot Water

Apply baking soda in a generous amount all over the affected area.

Now pull out that hot soapy rag out of the bowl and squeeze half the water out. You want it to be soggy, not sopping.

Then wait about 15 minutes…

In the meantime, you can tick off a few things on the deep cleaning kitchen checklist – Download a free printable PDF and always be reminded to clean the places we never think of!

Once the time is up, swirl the rag around in circles, using the baking soda paste as a gentle scrub.

The dry up the surface and shine it up with a cloth. Good as new!!

I repeated these steps once to achieve these results. You may also leave the rag on for longer, depending on how bad it is. Get it to sparkle & shine by spritzing the surface with a little big of vinegar, and wipe clean.
