For the first 6 years of my journey of being a mom it was strictly boy stuff – blue pajamas, cars & trucks and any sports teams were the themes I would decorate or dress JP with. I never expected we would have a second child until it happened, so I more or less gave in to the idea that we would only be a family of 3 and I would solely be a boy-mom. Then along comes Melody and changed the whole family dynamic!
Being a mom to a little girl has its differences from being a boy-mom. I am secretly thrilled that she loves tutus, unicorns and all things girly! However, I also realize that having a daughter means she will need some womanly guidance as she grows into a young lady.
Unfortunately kids don’t come with manuals on how to raise them – we as parents just have to feel our way through it and do the best we can! I am raising my daughter to believe in herself and most importantly as she grows older that she is in control of her own body and her own choices.
She is still just a little girl for now, but it won’t be long before she blossoms into a little woman and with that comes the possibility of pregnancy. Even though I’m all about newborn babies through my work as a newborn photographer and I love the idea of being a grandmother someday – but hopefully not before she’s ready to be a mom! This is why I think products like Plan B One-Step are options that should always be available to girls and women who need it.
Plan B One-Step is never to be taken as a routine method of birth control, however, there are always special circumstances as to why you would use this product. Whether it’s unprotected sex or sexual assault, it all circles back to girls and women being in control of their own body and making the best choices for themselves.
Before you judge me and call it an abortion pill, let me explain how it works… The active ingredient is called levonorgestrel, which is the same ingredient in many common birth control pills – just at a higher, single dose. Plan B One-Step works in a similar manner by delaying ovulation and helps to prevent pregnancy BEFORE it begins.
It is meant to be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex – the sooner you take it, the more effective it is.
You can find it at most – major drugstores – I got mine from CVS using this $10 off coupon (you do not need an ID or prescription to purchase). What’s also great about taking Plan B One-Step is that it will not impact a woman’s future (or long-term) fertility.
For now, I am happy being a girl-mom and shopping the adorable clothing section at Target for shoes and tutus. I’m going to try and hold on to her a little longer before she grows up too fast…
