I got the opportunity to install a Schlage® Sense™ Smart deadbolt and handle set and all opinions and thoughts expressed are 100% my own.

We’ve had so many home projects going on all summer and I’m happy that we are beginning to finalize all the repairs since the hail storms back in March. New roof, new light fixtures, new ceilings, new deck & patio and most recently a new door handle and lock. It wasn’t part of the storm damage repairs, but our current handle was badly in need of replacing and a Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt & handle seemed to be the perfect option as it offers some of the best security and proven durability with over 90 years in the business.

I’m not gonna lie – this project kind of intimidated me because changing out a door handle & dead bolt just seemed like that was something for people who knew what they were doing… Although the instructions were clear and detailed, I never know what I’m doing until I jump in feet first and try to figure it out. Much to my surprise, I figured it out! And it was much easier than I expected….

This is what I was working with.. Green painted door, worn brass handle, worn brass kick plate.. The worst part? The broken handle gets stuck all the time so we had to put duct tape along the door edge to keep it from sticking in the frame. I got stuck outside too many times this summer frantically jiggling the handle to get back in, so taping it was the only solution until we could replace it.

BEFORE2

My front porch finally got it’s long overdue makeover and every makeover needs paint, so I decided to change the green door to an even colored black door using exterior flat paint from the local paint shop. I thought the paint job would cover some imperfections like the booboo left behind from the command strip that once held up my Christmas wreath. Yikes!

I’m thinking of fixing this problem by installing a brushed nickel door knocker. Hardware always helps make things look more expensive and finished. I love how the Schlage® door knocker looks because it matches the satin nickel finish on the door handle and keypad perfectly. I was going to install it, but I realized I had the wrong drill bit size so I decided to wait on that. Schlage® products come in a variety of finishes including (to name a few) brass, oiled bronze, chrome and brushed nickel (as shown). There’s a wide array of different style handles, levers, knobs in a variety of finishes. Check out the Schlage® website and see which one is best suited for you.

I decided to re-finish the kick plate that was already there because I did not want a golden brass kick plate and a satin nickel door handle. Originally, I wanted to do away with it altogether, but after re-painting the door you could still see the lines and holes where the screws once sat… Not a good look, so I used some metallic spray paint to have it match the handle and put it back on.

Slowly but surely I got the old handle removed and replaced it with the new keyless deadbolt and handle. I love a good before and after!!

As simple as it was to install, I’m so happy that we have a keyless entry and I never have to worry about being locked out again! It works seamlessly with my iphone and I can coordinate numeric passcodes granting access to whomever I choose. I can even lock and unlock the door simply by telling siri what to do!

Oh, and just for us old-schoolers, they included a real key with the lock 🙂
