Do you have trouble getting your kids to brush their teeth? I’ve heard both sides of it, some kids are easier than others to talk them into doing it, however I’m not so lucky. Getting my child to brush his teeth can be on par with pulling teeth. There’s excuses, protesting, procrastinating and always tears when the morning/bedtime teeth brushing routine begins. I’ve even tried putting up artwork in the bathroom encouraging him to brush – but so far hasn’t worked as well as I thought it would. Maybe it would for you – enjoy a free printable here.
It’s exhausting and prompted me to have a heart to heart talk about why he doesn’t like to brush his teeth, and his answer was simple – “It’s too spicy, mama”.
Spicy? I never thought of it in those terms, but it made me think twice about what I was making him use for toothpaste. Since it was a kid’s toothpaste, I never actually tried it myself to see what it was like, so I didn’t realize that it actually had that strong minty sensation. Finally, I got to the bottom of what was bothering him! So on my last trip to Walmart, I decided to try getting him something new, and I purchased Tom’s of Maine Silly Strawberry™ Fluoride Toothpaste. There was also Antiplaque & Whitening Peppermint Fluoride Free Toothpaste and Whole Care® Peppermint and Spearmint Fluoride Toothpaste available as well.
I also noticed some Unisex Long Lasting Apricot Deodorant while I was getting some toiletries for myself. I figured I would try some of that for myself and see if I like it! So far I’m loving the level of protection it puts out, and the fact that it’s all natural with no aluminum is a huge bonus.
He loves strawberry flavored anything, so I knew this would go over well and possibly lead to an easier time for both of us when it comes to brushing teeth. Not only is it suited for children, it’s also a natural oral care product that’s made with no artificial colors, flavors, fragrances or preservatives. I’m all about avoiding harsh chemicals and unknown substances, so this was the best choice for us.
Plus, selling him the idea of this new toothpaste was easy because he’s been learning all about earth month at school. He comes home telling me all about recycling, conserving water and smarter eco-friendly choices. This is one of this week’s classroom assignments – I love his crayon colored pictures!
Because of it’s connection to “eco-friendly” Suddenly, the new Tom’s of Maine Silly Strawberry™ Fluoride Toothpaste became special compared to his other toothpaste! Perhaps now it won’t be so “spicy” as JP describes it…
So as luck would have it, we visited the dentist last week for JP’s semi-annual checkup and a cleaning and to see if there was any cavities. He was such a trooper! Poor guy was scared but was relieved when we heard there was no cavities. I was too, considering how hard it is to get him to brush!
