Potty training a little boy was an adventure to say the least, and we succeeded at that a few years ago. Now I struggle with teaching him things like aim and not using the bathroom in the dark for obvious reasons. There’s also one more little thing I wish I could ‘train’ but I know better than to think its possible until it finally clicks for him, and that’s good old fashioned bedwetting.
For many children, bedwetting can go on for many years – I even vividly remember a few of my own experiences with it as a child. What’s worse is that the older a child gets, the more humiliating the experience to even admit it to your mom and dad.
I learned this first hand because one morning I noticed JP wearing a mis-matched set of PJ’s. Usually I try to lay out a matched set for him each night after his bath, so I knew something was slightly off. When I questioned him about his wardrobe change, he looked at me bewildered and stammered, “I don’t know…”. Truthfully, I kinda knew that he probably wet the bed the night before and changed himself in the dark so nobody would know the wiser. However, the wet underwear and PJ’s in his hamper told a different story. It broke my heart that at the tender age of 5, he felt embarrassed over his own accident and tried to cover it up. When I suggested a night time diaper he wailed a loud “noooooooo!” and begged me that he wouldn’t do it again – I felt terrible for him.
My solution? I got the brand new GoodNites® TRU-FIT® Underwear Starter Pack when I was grocery shopping at Kroger last. It’s perfect for the older child who views disposables as something for babies and is either humiliated over wearing them or flat out refuses to wear them.
Its basically a pair of cloth briefs that look and feel just like real underwear, except you fit the crotch area with a large absorbent maxi-pad type liner. They’re even machine washable so once you buy the starter pack, all you need are the GoodNites® TRU-FIT® Insert Refill Pack. They can be purchased for both boys and girls (boys = blue briefs, girls = pink panties) and come in S/M for the younger kids and M/L for the older ones.
As it turns out, according to a study conducted by GoodNites® it’s estimated that 1 in 6 children between the ages of 4-12 in the United States suffer from “nocturnal enuresis” which is the fancy way of saying “bedwetting”. Children who occasionally wet the bed at night might not want to partake in fun kid activities such as sleepovers for fear of embarrassment. Sadly, it’s not something you can ‘train’ your child to stop doing either – they just have to grow out of it on their own.
